Archetypes

Harry Potter

Batman and Robin
"Archetype" is a broad term used to describe any given type of character, personality, symbol, or other literary device that is widely recognized and used. In literature, the term almost always refers to a type of generic character personality that appears in many literary works. The "mad scientist," is a character archetype because it is almost universally recognized and widely used in films like Frankenstein and the Back to the Future trilogy. The term may, alternatively, be used to refer to the original use of an often-reused character or personality type. Archetypes are used in a variety of types of literature, but most are thought to originate in early (Greek, Roman and Celt) mythology.

Some of the classic Archetypes in movies include:

Protagonist - Harry Potter (Harry Potter), Superman (Superman), Batman (Batman), Robin Hood (Robin Hood), Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings)

Lex Luthor
Sidekick - Ron Weasley (Harry Potter), Robin (Batman), Little John (Robin Hood), Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings)

Nemesis - Lord Voldemort (Harry Potter), Lex Luthor (Superman), The Joker (Batman), Sherrif of Nottingham (Robin Hood), Sauron (Lord of the Rings)
